“If I wanted to learn how to play basketball really well, I would go to Marvin* instead of Carl*. If I wanted to learn how to play some sort of board game, I would go to Carl instead of Marvin. If I wanted to learn how to Instagram, who would I go to? Hopefully not one of the male staffers!
…But if I wanted wisdom, I would go to the Lord.”
I wasn’t really focusing on what else my pastor had to say because my mind was stuck on that one statement. Hopefully not one of the male staffers? That’s almost like saying women cannot be pro racecar drivers. It is sexist and so judgmental, and being judgmental is what we Christians are told NOT to do (Matthew 7:1). My pastor’s statement about gender roles really upset me, almost as much as a statement I heard when I visited my current church for the first time. This was from a different pastor. He said disgustedly,
“We see America shifting away from Christian ideals as we head towards the future. For example, New York just passed the law allowing homosexuals to get married.”
WOW… seriously? So much for “treat others the way you want to be treated” (Luke 6:31). I guess you would like your marriage rights revoked too?
I can write novels about being a Christian who supports LGBT rights and how I think it is absolutely ridiculous that some people will adamantly refuse to pass laws that will not have any negative effects on them. However, I will not do that now.
Yeah, I need to find a new church pronto.
